From Booklist The seventeenth novel in the saga of Recluce is set about a generation after the fall of Cyador. We learn that the last empress of Cyador got the surviving lancers and magi on the last fireship just before Cyad was destroyed. They settled in Hamor, and, using Cyadoran technology, have established the fertile enclave of Cigoerne, which is greatly coveted by their less fortunate neighbors. The story is told from the point of view of Lerial, the second son of the ruler of Cigoerne. Lerial is expected to lead his brother’s forces one day, and this story is his coming-of-age as he works to strengthen his skills in arms, command, and the handling of order and chaos, and faces his first battle. This is not one of Modesitt’s best novels in the saga, but it does show us a time and place about which not much has been written. It is certainly an encouragement to read Heritage of Cyador, the next book in the series. --Frieda Murray

Modesitt has told many times before in his Saga of Recluce. It's neither original nor awful; mostly, it's like welcoming back an old friend who regales you with a good yarn for the umpteenth and perhaps once-too-many time. It's probably best enjoyed by those who already have a significant investment in the series. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for sentimentality."Cyador's Heirs" marks Modesitt's 17th entry in the Saga of Recluce. It is his first since 2010's Arms-Commander and as the first of two planned volumes marks the first time since 2007's Natural Ordermage and 2008's Mage-Guard of Hamor that he has written extensively in this world.While Modesitt had largely exhausted the "young ethical mage from a well placed family grows into his powers and becomes the most powerful wielder of magic and a competent military commander while crushing enemies foreign and domestic despite a peaceful outlook on life while paying a price for their actions" template years back, what made the last three books palatable were their departures from this formula. A mature feminist protagonist fighting a brutally patriarchal society provided a significant twist to Arms-Commander, and a less well birthed and strongly flawed hero attempting to overcome his mistakes and survive in a brutal environment made Natural Ordermage one of the top books in the series.Cyador's Heirs doesn't have that. What it does have is a second-in-line to a throne who learns about his powers, gets some guidance from a tutor in magic and a tutor in military affairs, learns about politics, gets thrown into a big military conflict, and learns how to command troops and grow his powers without killing himself.The nominal twist here is minor: watching exiles from an advanced civilization try to cling on to some of the remaining remnants of it. This makes for at least a few interesting moments, as thanks to previous entries in the series the reader will know more about that civilization than do the characters. It's also been long enough since Modesitt has used the original template so that it's not as numbingly repetitive as it was when he wrote one of these every year, and it's not the worst of the series by any means.That said, Recluce fans will probably enjoy this rewrite of a story that Modesitt has told many times before, but the Imager series provides a more creative take on this motif than do most of the later Recluce books. Those not deeply invested in this series will likely enjoy the first few Imager books more.3.5 stars rounded up to 4, mostly because it's good to see more of the interesting world that Modesitt created 25 years ago even if his most recent entry is of middling quality. It's nice to be back in Recluce, but given Modesitt has previously demonstrated he's capable of breathing new life into an old series, it's probably fair to have hoped for something more original here.
15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. I own all his books but.... By Shane's Brain This was a great disappointment. He has a formula. That worked well in his early recluse books. However he departed from that with the last two series and took each book and made them into three. If you read his last two you know the plot line exactly here. It's like a few chapters of a novel dragged out to 400 pages except with some sad inconsistencies. It's like he forgot at times which book he was writing. Even the plot lines are almost exact and not in a good way. He has the second son of the king at times acting like an under captain when talking to a major...not plausible even if he has that rank a prince is still a prince. Lots of little inconsistencies. So, if you have never read any of his books and like books in multiple parts this is for you....if you have read the last few then you already know the plot. Boy discovers abilities. Treachery battles and small victory - the end.I think he is a great writer with great ideas. I wish he would get back to that and away from being a paper mill to make a few extra bucks of loyal fans.
10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Same as usual By V. Tong Modesitt is becoming...or should I say has become, very repetitive. All his novels read the same. Same expressions, same story lines, same vagueness. Still, it is worth reading, if you can put up with the myriad errors throughout the book. Does he not have proof readers.
