In Sunshine Bright and Darkness Deep is an anthology like no other. The tales herein will take you on a weird and terrifying journey. You will set out on a road trip and find yourself trapped in the arid Australian outback where a little girl and her grandfather struggle to survive. There are isolated farmhouses threatened by bushfires and bullets, and rainforests teeming with bloodthirsty bugs. The cities are full of trouble too. The murky waters of the Brisbane River hide spiteful spirits and the suburbs are infested with insane inhabitants masquerading as ordinary human beings. Then, you will leave Australia, departing from Melbourne, to hunt down vampiric gangsters in Southeast Asia, before sailing future seas and visiting realms beyond this world altogether. This inaugural showcase anthology features the work of just a handful of the many talented and darkly imaginative authors who make up the Australian Horror Writers’ Association. If you are unfamiliar with Australian horror, let this book be just the first step on a long voyage of discovery.

By Lee Murray In Sunshine Bright and Darkness Deep is supposed to be an eerie sampler of dark speculative fiction from my colleagues at the Australian Horror Writers Association. A taster collection which showcases their writing and, by extension, their dark and twisted minds. Actually, it rather fails as a sampler for dipping into, because these stories are as compelling as potato chips, and there is no simply no stopping at just one. And what a cunning plan to begin the title with In Sunshine Bright! In reality - and in the paranormal - this collection comprises mostly Darkness Deep, which is just the way I like it. You’re going to ask me which stories stood out, aren’t you? I liked them all. You insist? Well, loved Anderton’s exquisite treatment of the devastation that arises in the aftermath of a forest fire - I’m still thinking about that one - Young’s certainty that New Zealand is the place to be when the oceans turn toxic, and then there were those chilling chilling revelations about our co-workers from Satakovski. Trost and Smith’s stories were the sort to make me regret my dinner, Olver, McAuliffe, and Hore’s reminded me to be careful where I place my trust, and Ferguson has me too terrified to pull off the highway. Of course, no collection of this nature is complete without river sludge, bunyips, and vampires, and these are faithfully provided by Cameron, Karney, Smith-Briggs, and Nahrung. And finally, I must mention my writing partner in darkness Dan Rabarts, whose stories are always delightfully grim and who never fails to find the perfect place to use the word spooling. But I’ve just described all the stories, you say? [Shrugs]. Like I said, it’s hard to pick just one. I expect there will be awards somewhere down the track. And deservedly. With its terror tightened by editors Cameron Trost, Ben Knight and the team at AFWA, and stunning cover art by the dark lord, Greg Chapman, In Sunshine Bright and Darkness Deep is a must-have for all good bookcases.

By Lewis Woolston For those who are not aware the Australian Horror Writers Association (AHWA) is a group of writers helping writers. They are the most active group of horror writers in the country and have really helped new talent get a start. This collection gathers together some quality short fiction from their membership. The quality of stories here easily stands up with the best America or the UK have to offer. Take a close look at some of these names because I suspect they'll be big in a few years. If you like horror fiction and want to find your new favourite writer then this is for you. The bonus is that when (not if) some of these writers go on to bigger and better things you can say "i read them before they were big"

This anthology proves that there is more than enough talent currently residing in Australia's darkest corners. There is real nice mixture of short stories on offer. Two that really stood out for me were the tales by Joe Young-a story about a group of survivors adrift inside a submarine and a brilliant vampire tale that takes place in Kuala Lumpur. The book finishes on a real high too with a story about the horrors of war. If you are a fan of anthologies then I urge you to give this a go. Loved it. 5 stars.
