An Apesploitation Masterpiece By Sean Keller THE HUMANS feels like an underground comic from sealed in a time capsule from 1972 and unearthed for the pure joy of us readers. It explores the lunatic freedom, violence and lust for life of a '60s biker movie but populated by sentient apes. Set against the desert backdrop of Bakersfield California - masterfully rendered by artist Tom Neely and colorist Kristina Collantes - and reflecting the horrors of the Vietnam War, this story by Keenan Marshall Keller starts off like a simple tone poem and grows into a lusty, intriguing tale of roar as multiple ape gangs vie for control of Southern California's drug trade with our despicable, but somehow still lovable (must be the monkey in me) titular gang at the center of it all. If you love exploitation films, alternate realities and outsider art, THE HUMANS is for you. Dr. Zaius this ain't.

The Humans live in an alternate reality that's very similar to our own, only where the apes have become the intelligent ones, while human beings are kept naked as slaves. It's 1970, and Johnny has returned from the Vietnam War to Bakersfield, where the Humans ride. He's tortured by memories and visions, in a day when TBI and PTSD were barely-heard terms. The Humans think him dead, and his return is an occasion for celebration, but will the Skabbs, a rival biker gang, ruin the party?Visceral, violent, and engaging, The Humans is definitely a product of the 21st century. Sure, there were alternative comics in the early 1970s - great ones - but not ones like this. There were biker movies and Planet of the Apes, but the twain never had met. But this comic oozes the 1970s, the exploitation (or "apespoitation" as the back cover promises), the attitude, and the gang fury. It's equal parts Russ Meyer and Rod Sterling, fine to read, shocking, and wonderful. I'm looking forward to the second volume. ****1/2
