Pulp writer Johnston McCulley (1993-1938) was the author of hundreds of short stories and novels, published in pulp magazines under his own name and a plethora of pseudonyms. His most famous creation is, without a doubt, the masked swordsman Zorro, made popular by radio, movie, and television adaptations. But before Zorro hit it big, McCulley tried out dozens of different heroes and antiheroes: Black Star, the Avenging Twins, the Man in Purple, the Green Ghost, the Mongoose, Richard Hughes-Railroad Detective, the Spider, the Thunderbolt, the Crimson Clown...the list goes on and on. And it includes a good-hearted pickpocket with a lisp named "Thubway Tham," pursued by Detective Craddock of the New York Police Department.
Thubway Tham got his start in the June 4, 1918, issue of Detective Story Magazine, and continued on through more than 100 original stories in various magazines such as Black Book Detective, Clues, Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, and The Saint Detective Magazine). Tham's last apperance was in January of 1960. That's quite a run.
This volume collects 10 stories (plus a humorous anecdote).

But the way the diminutive pickpocket manages to outwit Detective Craddock time and again makes him an interesting and lovable character.Besides, most of you, like myself, had to read The Canterbury Tales back in high school. The lisping speech of Thuway Tham isn't more difficult than the Old English. Or maybe you have, as I have, read Peter Finley Dunne's Mister Dooley. Tham's lisp is really easier than Dooley's brogue. Even Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped and the novella Thrawn Janet (you like horror? Read this novella!) can be difficult to peruse, Tham is often easier.Enjoy the tales of this enterprising little crook with a sense of honor like no other. I did.Quoth the Raven

He has a regular detective who keys an eye on the little crook and forever promises to hail him. But thankfully the law never wins.The stories are short and funny. How funny is strictly a matter of taste. I got a kick out of this collection and will certainly by more Thubway Tham.Modest efforts but enjoyable for sure.
