By Ann de Vries I've read all five of these books through Kindle Unlimited, and liked them well enough that I intend to buy them when the budget permits. Other reviewers have given detailed synopses of the individual books, so I will just give an overview of what I liked or disliked about the series.I liked that each book focused on one couple, with the other characters recurring as secondary characters. It helped to become more familiar with the crew and to become invested in them. It helped that the characters were so different but so likeable, each in their individual way with their individual quirks.I liked the romance and the sex scenes that were integrated so well into the science fiction/futuristic genre. I can take or leave sex scenes as long as the story is good. Too many or too lengthy sex scenes spoil the story's flow for me, but these were just right. They were tastefully done, sensuous without sliding into erotica, and fit into the storyline without slowing it down. As for the romance, there was enough to please those who like romance in genre, without detracting from the action and adventure. To me, it was perfect.I also liked the world building and the storyline. It was easy to visualize the settings and they were consistent from book to book. The action sequences and adventures were engrossing and created the perfect amount of tension. Yes, we know in advance that there will be a happy ending, but the well crafted journey is what makes this series.I loved the dialogue. It flowed well and there was excellent repartee between some of the characters. Even the internal dialogue was witty and amusing. The writing conventions were excellent, which made the books a pleasure to read; no jarring grammatical mistakes to stop the story's flow. There may have been the odd typo, but nothing stood out. The writing was also very literate, with a great use of vocabulary to set scenes and convey emotions. Now for the negatives, the things I disliked about the books. Hmmmm. That is a hard one. There wasn't anything I disliked. I loved everything about them.I highly recommend this series. It should appeal to those who like science fiction books, adventure books and futuristic romance books. As well, it should appeal to both males and females, as well as young adults and seniors.

Although they can be read as stand alone novels, I think you'll get more out of them if you read them in sequence as there are nice little catch-up moments with previous characters throughout the novels. Ruby sets a cracking pace, with good story lines and characters that you like and want to engage with. I hope she continues with more Mandrake company stories in the future.

The lead characters in each book are easy to relate to because they all have very human flaws as well as strengths. There is plenty of humor to balance the intense action. Fun reads all.First book in the series is Mercenary Instinct and here is my review:I have always enjoyed scifi and love the way the author achieved just the right balance between action, romance and humor in a scifi setting. This is the first of four books about Mandrake Company and it features the captain, Viktor Mandrake. He is intrigued and somewhat bemused by Ankari Markovich, who is scrambling to earn enough to help her friends and her family. Unfortunately for Ankari someone has put a very large bounty for her and her two business partners. Things get interesting quickly once Ankari's crew is scooped up by the mercenaries and she starts attempting to escape.I loved this book so much I promptly bought the other three written so far in this series. This author excels at writing a series of books that allows for richer character development and more depth to the overall story line. By the way . . . these are HOT!!Second book is Trial and Temptation:This is the second book about Mandrake Company and is just as good as the first. Many of the same characters are back and this time it is pilot Commander Gregor Thatcher who meets his match in Val Calendula. Val is applying for a combat pilot job with Mandrake Company and is very surprised to run into a former instructor from military flight academy.Gregor is a wonderfully nerdy Aspbergers type who finds the rest of humanity puzzling. He has had a crush on Val since academy days but has no idea how to let her know. How these two work things out is very entertaining. The action is fast paced with plenty of interesting twists and turns.Third on the list is The Assassin's Salvation:Ruby Lionsdrake is on a roll with The Mandrake Company. This is the third book and it is Jamie's turn in the spotlight. Jamie is the youngest of Ankari's crew and a mechanical genius. However she is also naive and feeling overwhelmed by all the boisterous male attention she gets from Mandrake's mercenaries. Sergei Zharkov is an assassin who was part of Vicktor's command from years past and suffered emotional wounds at the hands of their "counselors". The relationship these two very different people develop is fascinating to watch unfold. Jamie is by far the more stable and intelligent of the two while Sergei is the brawn. He deeply appreciates Jamie's calm acceptance of who he is and what he has done.I love seeing characters from the first two books appear again and take part in the action in this one, something Ruby does extremely well. The perfect blend of action and smexy scenes continues in the book. Another pleasant feature is the overall quality of the editing which is not always the case with self-published material these days. Great read! And fourth is The Ruins of Karzelek:This book features the intelligence office, Sedgwick Thomlin, who rarely sets foot on a planet because of his extreme allergies. Mandrake Company has been hired by Kalish, a successful treasure hunter, to help search for alien artifacts on a planet with an existing mining operation. They team up with Val, Gregor, Tik and Striker to steal maps of some underground caverns. From there things go south with plenty of explosions courtesy of Striker and Gregor.Sedgwick is deeply attracted to Kalish but she is a woman with secrets she doesn't want to share . . . an irresistible combination for someone of his investigative talents. Naturally this leads to trouble between them. Kalish's younger sister and cantankerous mother interfere as well. How all these people and some impressive alien artifacts blend together creates plenty of excitement and makes for a great story.Ruby Lionsdrake is officially on my "must read every thing she writes" list!
