Not my favorite in the series but still a good story By Kim U 3.5 starsAs the story opens, Wynn is having a seriously messed up day with a delayed flight, the discovery of a destroyed Guardian statue, being chased, injured, and nearly killed by a bad guy, and the appearance of a newly summoned Guardian to save her from said bad guy's clutches. As they are leaving the scene of Knox's arrival into the human world, she is further rattled by a call from her mother indicating the police want to talk to her about some new information in her brother's disappearance. The hits just keep on coming after a pointless conversation with the 2 officers who seemed to be fishing for information rather than providing anything useful.Wynn was introduced in Stone Cold Lover. She is a bona fide witch and a member of a family that has produced at least one Warden per generation. In this generation, her brother Bran (the missing one referenced above) was chosen as the Guild rarely chooses a woman for the role, a fact that has caused Wynn to become bitter and resentful of the association. So when Knox is summoned into existence, she is unsurprisingly less than excited to become his Warden by default. In her mind, she is wondering if she will just be shuffled to the side in the future in favor of a male Warden given the Guild's history.Upon his appearance, Knox instantly recognized her as his mate and understood the implications due to the collective knowledge passed onto him by his kind. Wynn doesn't understand his view of or the reality of the mate bond. Feeling more than a little overwhelmed by the mess she has been sucked into, she is resistant to the belief that Fate chooses someone for you rather than having the choice to fall in love. Knox cannot understand her refusal to accept what is so clearly right to him and is hurt by her rejection. On a side note, I have to wonder if the Guardian's human form is molded to the preference of their human mate because if so, all I can say is go Wynn! This is how he is described: "He looked like some kind of biker thug, with his shaved head, heavy musculature, and dark clothing. Wrap the man in some leather, slap on a goatee, have him straddle a Harley, and he’d look like he’d just ridden off the set of Sons of Anarchy. Charlie Hunnam’s pretty, wavy locks had nothing on this guy." Yum!Anyhow, this story continues the search for answers and weapons in the fight against the Order of Eternal Darkness, this time in the Chicago area, and the hope of discovering the remaining 4 members of the Guardians needed to fight the Seven. Through it all Wynn fights to come terms with Knox and the fact that the universe has assigned her a mate as she sees it, and that often leads to her fighting first herself and then Knox. Her personality and snark amused me endlessly throughout the story. She uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism but fortunately her family is used to it- and Knox and her friends seem to quickly acclimate to it. While I did enjoy this latest entry to the series, I didn't connect with either Wynn or Knox nearly as well as I did with Kees and Ella or Fil and Spar and I can't really say why that is. But I will be waiting to see who the subject of the next book will be. In the prior 2 stories, the new Warden was introduced but I am not sure I know who it will be for the next book. There is one possibility in a friend of Wynn's who appeared briefly but I will have to wait to see what the author brings our way next to find out if my guess is accurate!

It is an action packed wonderfully paced plot that never fails to entertain. Each book has characters that are interesting and enticing for the reader. I wouldn’t have thought that I would like gargoyles as my paranormal creature of choice, but Ms. Warren’s have become just that. This is the third book in the series and is still building up steam for what I hope will be a long line of books.Knox is the kind of guy that is so appealing. He’s protective, loyal, but able to adapt to the changing times, something many of the males in Wynn’s life haven’t tried, let alone mastered. Wynn herself is a resourceful, independent kind of girl but not without her vulnerabilities, so she and Knox make a well-matched couple in saving the world as well as life in general. Ms. Warren out did herself this time creating these two.I have enjoyed this entire series with Hard as a Rock now a new favorite.Net Galley provided a copy.

I must admit I find this series brilliant and each book is completely fabulous. It grabs you by the hand and leads you on a journey you don’t want to miss. I love the Guardians and their fierce women. Each book can be read as a standalone but to be honest, their stories and characters are wonderful and each deserves to be read. I can’t wait for the next book in this superb series.Opening Scene:“Wynn? What is it? What’s going on? Did you find him?”The Review:Wynn has always wanted to be a Warden and even more has wanted her own Guardian. Suddenly the Wardens have disappeared including her beloved brother. She’s left with hunting down her own Guardian without any training, only to find him blown to smithereens by the Order. She then has to summon another; without any Warden training. If that wasn’t bad enough she knows she’ll only be his Warden for a short while. After all once the Wardens return their no females allowed rule will kick back into place.Knox is a newly created Gargoyle rising in the defense of Wynn Powe. Expecting what the collective memories of previous Guardians had, he is greatly puzzled when instead of receiving awe and wonder he gets an irritated woman giving him orders.Yet the attraction crackling between Wynn and Knox is unmistakable. No matter how much she tries to deny or ignore it, it just won’t go away. With the Order of Eternal Darkness rising; the reality of the fight ahead of them kicks in. Wynn and Knox must work together and maybe grab some happiness if they manage to stay alive.Notable Scene:The small woman glared at him fiercely, her brown eyes regarding him not with the wonder and reverence his inherited memory told him to expect, but with something that looked a lot more like … irritation? Did she not realize who he was?“Do not concern yourself, human,” he instructed her, ignoring the way the man in his grasp squirmed and choked. “This creature is a servant of the Darkness and does not deserve your compassion. You see, I am a Guar_”“Yeah, yeah, I know you’re a guardian.” She waved her hand at him, her tone dismissive.Dismissive?“Sworn to protect humanity from the ultimate evil of the Seven demons of the Darkness,” she continued. Her tone sounding suspiciously bored as she recited his reason for existence. “Trust me, I can see what you are, but that still doesn’t mean you get to kill the security guard. You’ll get both of us arrested if you try. So do me a favor and put him down before he slips into a coma, okay? He’s already looking a little bit blue around the edges.”Startled, Knox looked at his captive and saw that the human woman was right. His huge, bat-like wings rustled in irritation. The male ceased struggling, and the edges of his lips had paled and begun to turn a strange bluish-gray color. His eyes began to roll back in his head even as Knox released his hold and let the human drop to the ground, where he lay motionless.FTC Advisory: Amy Goppert through Net Galley provided me with a copy of Hard as a Rock by Christine Warren.
