5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The fate of the Emerald City... By HMS Warspite "The Emerald City of Oz" is the sixth Marvel graphic novel based on the famous stories by L. Frank Baum, who meant this title to be the last in the series. Eric Shanower and Skottie Young do their award-winning best as adapter and illustrator in one last marvelous presentation of the fantastical world of Oz.As the story opens, the Nome King is still furious over losing his magic belt in a fair contest to Dorothy, back in "Ozma of Oz". He decides to tunnel his way into the Emerald City with his army, to steal the belt and subjugate Oz. He orders his leading general to find some nasty allies while the tunnel is being dug.Back in Kansas, Dorothy and Toto learn that her Uncle Henry and Auntie Em are about to lose their farm. Nothing daunted, Dorothy suggests a relocation to Oz, a place her aunt and uncle are quite astonished to find is real. Ozma suggests a tour of Oz with some of Dorothy's old friends. The tour will be quite the surprise, with living dolls, the Spoon Brigade, and a town full of living deserts. Uncle Henry and Auntie Em will even get to meet Dorothy's oldest friends in Oz: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.The travelers will be summoned back to the Emerald City to face a horde of invaders. How will Dorothy and her friends defend Oz? If the Nome King and his allies can't be stopped, will this be the end of Oz? Can Dorothy ever go back to Kansas?This Marvel edition is another excellent graphic novel adaptation, highly recommended to fans of the Wizard of Oz.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The final Oz adaptation by Marvel is a real gem of a book. By Rocky Sunico Compared to prior Oz books, this one certainly had a rather focused story at its core. As much as the Ozians continue to have a rather relaxed and typical Oz story flow where they meet different people and focus on Aunt Em and Uncle Henry just taking all of Oz in. On the flip side we have the big plan of the Nome King and his forces, which is highly focused and quit the straightforward narrative.The gathering of the Nome King's army is also quite the colorful illustration of the diversity of different Ozians. As much as we see this in ever Oz story, I guess the narrative focus really helps things along as well. Plus we also have Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on their own little tour of Oz even with even more colorful creatures like the living paper dolls or the unusual jigsaw puzzle people. The list goes on and on and it seems that this particular book became quite the creative venture with some wonderful ideas for unique inhabitants of Oz.I think the fact that this story was told in a mere 5 issues instead of up to 8 issues as seen in prior Marvel Oz comics helped keep things rather focused and didn't have certain scenes getting dragged out longer than needed. As much as I enjoy seeing more of Skottie Young's art, even Shanower's skilled writing can only keep pace with things for so long. The trick about such adaptations is the need to figure out how to edit down to a story that works for the medium. And this book felt like it really benefited from its brevity.The Emerald City of Oz does make for a nice end to the Marvel Oz comics as a whole and is a solid enough story on its own. It's not something that I'll forget anytime soon and I will be forever grateful to Shanower and Young for bringing these Oz books to life in an amazing way.

The adaptation by Eric Shanower is excellent as it shows Baums marvelous puns and wit. However I wish they would continue the series and hope they do. These books are great for kids as they would introduce them to Baum's in a whole new way.
