Well living on a narrow boat will still incur you bills, I am sorry to say, but are you armed with the knowledge for your new environment? I hope this book will illuminate the ones you expect and most importantly the ones you did not. Where I can, I will arm you with ballpark figures of engine servicing, hiring a dry dock, what your gas and diesel cost and how long it will last you, so you are not left feeling that your lack of knowledge is leaving you vulnerable, but remember, they are only ballpark figures, for in the main prices do rise and fall from one part of the country to the other. But it is nice to know roughly when buying a boat, that you can ask questions like “When is its hull due for blacking and what type of blacking has it got on it?” Then having a rough idea, if due next year, what it is going to cost you to have that work done. Or you can ask what batteries has the boat got and how old they are and more importantly how they have been cared for and what is the method used when they are charged? The answers to these questions may colour the price you are willing to pay for that boat, when you say to yourself that is going to cost me £500 +.
