I loved the escapist fantasy of it all. So the idea of a futuristic update was intriguing, but at the same time I was really hoping the author didn’t screw it up by making it too silly or dumbed down. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with where the story went. Yes, it has some of the themes and elements of the original Robinson Crusoe, but the story is wholly original from start to finish. In the last five years, I’ve read a ton of dystopian novels, so when this book started off with a touch of that genre, I was a little worried. But after 10% of the way thru, Robinson was off to the “forbidden land” where the real story begins. From there, I was immediately hooked. Early on it seems like he’ll be killed quick and easy and only through some luck does he survive. But as he moves forward, he really begins to grow, from a boy to a man. And that’s my favorite aspect about the tale. It’s about him becoming resilient even when he fails. His character ends up coming full circle by becoming a man.One of the best things about this book is that it’s loaded with action. Once the plot takes off, it doesn’t stop. And there are a lot of nice twists and turns. I hate books that have too many threads that never get connected in the end, but this one does a good job of layering in things early and having them pay off late. I kept thinking, “oh, that’s cool” again and again. All in all, I thought this was a solid book and I’m really surprised it’s a direct publishing gig. The story’s better than many conventionally published novels in the same genre. It’s also nice to see something in this genre written by a guy for a chance. Overall, I think this one will stay with me and I hope the author keeps the character going. I’d love to see what happens next.

By Andrea Six months after my (and it seems like everyone else's) disappointment with Allegiant, I've finally stepped in off the ledge to dip a toe back into the kindle waters. Nothing mainstream has caught my eye, but my friend recommended this book so I thought I'd give it a go for a couple bucks. With my intense workload of late, I wasn't looking for anything too heavy or too serious. I wanted something simple and fun to read at the beach. I should've known when I got a sunburn the first day that I was getting hooked. The beginning starts off a little slow, typical post-apocalypse/dystopian world building stuff, but around the 50 page mark when Robinson finally flees for America, the book started to really take off and I found it harder and harder to put down. The world full of mutants or zombies or whatever felt scary and real and creepy. I also like that the author chose D.C. to set the story in rather than New York or L.A. The landmarks lend legitimacy to the "downfall of America" idea, and the fact that some of them are woven into the plot also makes for a lot of cool surprises. While there's more action and adventure here than anything, the heart of this story is still about a first romance. I'd almost even call it a love triangle, but nothing like Twilight or Hunger Games. I'm SO over sappy romances where characters like Bella and Katniss pine for boys for 300 pages (or 1,000+ for the whole series!). Here, the "star crossed lovers" both know a relationship will only mean danger for them, but slowly, surely, they hook up and become the center of each other's world.About midway through the book, the plot takes off and there were a lot of things I didn't see coming. I liked how the stakes kept getting higher and higher for the characters. I like how Robinson got tougher and tougher and had to step up to be worthy of the girl. I like how the story has a smart ending, but leaves a few things open -- for possibly a series? (I hope!) I caught a few misspellings and grammar errors, but nothing too bad. All in all, I'd give it four and a half stars and can't wait for a sequel.Definitely worth buying. A real page turner. I recommend it!!!!

By Kathy Jordan This is a series and though I liked the book, not sure yet if I will read anymore in the series. Somewhat formulaic with overly graphic violence. The young man escapes from a transformed Britain and lands in a decimated America. Sets up housekeeping with the help of another survivor, avoids monster-like transformed zombie creatures and fights the people from his country who come to steal the secrets that remain in America to take over the world in their own bizarre image of a type of theocratic government. I liked the main character, but again the gratuitus violence turned me off, the hopelessness of the situation and the escapes all became somewhat unbelievable. The writing is good and captured my attention quickly.
